Civic Leadership Competencies: Collaboration, Social and Political Processes

The Rice University Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program enables Rice students to advance their understanding of one social issue; to engage communities on this issue through service, social justice, advocacy, and/or public policy; and to learn about the value of the reflection process and connecting with others on a deeper level. The success of each ASB trip depends upon the commitment and preparation of Site Leaders who are responsible for conceptualizing and implementing a high quality program for their peers.

Students who wish to lead an ASB apply in pairs. Every ASB trip starts with a pair of students identifying a social issue that they care about and demonstrating a strong motivation to lead their peers in acquiring a deeper understanding of that issue through pre-trip education and a dedicated week of service.  Once accepted, Site Leaders begin a comprehensive, year-long development and training process that includes one full-team meeting held before summer break, a 2-credit course in the fall semester, an intense 2-day weekend workshop in the early fall semester, and a 1-credit course in the spring semester. Through this training program, Site Leaders will work with many people across the university and the community in order to plan a meaningful ASB experience for their peers.

Funding: CCL funding and participant registration fees subsidize trip costs. Participants are responsible for raising the balance of funds needed to cover trip costs. The CCL also offers need-based scholarships to subsidize individual registration fees.
